Abstract
A survey of butterfly fauna in the vicinity of Gunung Jerai, Kedah, was conducted during the scientific expedition in June (2-5) 2005 and continued in October (22-24) 2005. For each occasion, samplings were carried out for 4 and 3 consecutive days in June and October 2005, respectively, with 3-man sampling efforts per day. A total of 49 species in 29 genera, encompassing 8 subfamilies under 5 families, i.e Papilionidae (9 species), Pieridae (11 species), Nymphalidae (25 species), Lycaenidae (4 species) and Hesperiidae (1 species) was recorded. Of the 49 species recorded, 2 appeared rare (each found with 1 individual only) and these include 2 species listed as protected species under Wildlife Protected Species Act 76, i.e. Troides brookiana (Wallace) and Troides amphrysus (Cramer) both from Papilionidae: Papilioninae. Spatially and temporally, 14 species appeared as the most common species (found in all sampling occasions), However, Ypthima pandocus Moore appeared as the most abundant species (with 36 total individuals found), followed by Cethosia penthesilea (Cramer) (with 33 total individuals found) and Papilio iswara iswara White (with 27 total individuals found).
