Abstract

Gunung Jerai is an isolated mountain located in the north-western part of Peninsular Malaysia. Although the mountain encompasses a number of forest types, the area seems to have a relatively low number and diversity of avifauna especially the montane species. The main objective of the study is to examine whether montane bird species are present on Gunung Jerai. The six-day survey was conducted using mist- netting and direct observation method at an elevation from 700 m up to the peak. Results indicated that a total of 34 species were recorded, which mostly comprised of common and colonizing species that have extended their typical range to the montane habitat. The only montane species (Stachyris nigriceps) reported previously was not observed in this study, which suggested that local loss might have occurred in the last decade within this isolated forest. Thus, the diversity and abundance of Gunung Jerai montane avifauna might not be comparable to that of the continuous forests of the Main Range.
