Abstract

A rapid assessment survey was carried out to investigate the abundance and distribution of frogs and toads on and around Gunung Jerai, from 4-9 June 2005, in accord with the Biodiversity Expedition of Gunung Jerai 2005. Field parties, comprising 4-6 persons, collected frogs and toads from selected rivers on and around the mountain. Adult amphibians were captured by hand and nets at night, while tadpoles were observed and collected during the day. A total of 85 adults from 14 species and four families were recorded. Bufo asper was the most abundant species followed by Microhyla butleri, Limnonectes blythii, Microhyla heymonsi and Rana nigrovittata, while Bufo melanostictus, Rana picturata and Rana hosii were rare. Shannon's Diversity Index showed that the diversity of amphibians here is relatively healthy. Comparison between the communities on mountain top and foothills showed that some parts of the rivers in the Gunung Jerai Forest Reserve are disturbed while others are still largely undisturbed.
