Abstract
Recognising the importance of the great diversity of flora and fauna within the Malaysian forest, there is a need to conserve them through in situ or ex situ techniques. Both means of conservation require a clear understanding of the relative importance and availability of these resources. Various research activities in Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) are producing important data that can be used in developing suitable conservation strategies. The documentation of the tree flora, survey of the virgin jungle reserves and plant endemicity within the Malay Peninsula are examples. Ex situ means of collecting and planting threatened species as well as in vitro methods of using the forest are studied to further justify the need for its conservation.
