Abstract
Awareness on the importance of geological heritage resources within forests had increased steadily among the Malaysian public. The Forestry Department of Peninsular Malaysia had included various geological features as among its heritage to be conserved within certain State Parks, whereas geoforest park was specially created to highlight scientific value behind beautiful natural geological landscapes and geological heritage sites within certain Permanent Reserved Forests. It is an approach towards a holistic conservation that integrates conservation for the living component of the forest, i.e. fauna and flora, its soil foundation and its unique geological heritage resources. In doing so, a geoforest park provides excellent sites for recreation and education as well as scenic panoramic view to be experienced and enjoyed. The Forestry Department has great opportunities to incorporate into the recreational forest conservation, the various geological features such as waterfalls, rapids, thermal springs, lakes, caves, hills, mountains and beaches that are closely related to the park's nature recreation. Understanding the complete geological history of each recreational forest is crucial in order to protect its geological heritage resources from natural degradation and man made deterioration, to ensure sustainability of the park recreation capacity by providing essential infrastructure for nature-based recreational tourism, without unnecessary man made recreational facilities. Conserving geological heritage resources that formed the foundation of these forests would support holistic nature conservation.
