Abstract

The coastal areas of the States of Penang Kedah and Perak were affected by the tsunami of 26 December 2004. Fishing vessels were observed to be destroyed and many fishers could not fish immediately after the tsunami. Initial reports showed the fisheries in particular the traditional fisheries were most badly affected areas in the Kuala Muda areas of Kedah and the Balik Pulau areas in Penang. The trends of catch rates and fishing efforts of the trammel net and bag net fisheries of Kuala Muda Kedah and Southwest Penang Island were analysed. The catch rates for some species caught by trammel nets and bag nets were observed to be higher immediately after the tsunami due to a reduction of fishing effort. Three to five months after the tsunami catch rates dropped to levels observed in the years before the tsunami. Catch rate and fishing effort data showed that the tsunami had temporarily affected the traditional coastal fishery resources.
