Lawate, Saurabh and Huang, Chor and Tam, Nelson (2005) Additives for vegetable oil based lubricants. [Proceedings Paper]
Abstract
Vegetable oils from various sources such as canola, sunflower, soybean and palm are finding increasing use as lubricating base oils. Vegetable oils possess many beneficial properties not found in Group I-IV base oils such as biodegradability, high lubricity, flash point and viscosity index. However, they also have deficiencies with respect to oxidative stability and low temperature properties. Additive technology has to be tailored for use in vegetable oil lubricant so that the benefits are enhanced and deficiencies are addressed. Hydraulic fluids and food grade lubricants constitute an attractive application for vegetable oils. Additive packages (LZ76XX) have been designed that enable a variety of vegetable oils to be used in these applications. These additives range from antioxidants, thickeners to industrial and food grade hydraulic and gear additive packages that meet pertinent industry specifications. Performance data (including pump tests) in a variety of vegetable oils is available giving the user flexibility to balance cost/performance.
