Abstract
A study on the impact of the tsunami on cephalopod species in Kedah waters was carried out. Results from the two surveys conducted in October 1997 and May 2005 were analyzed. Landing statistics of Zone B trawlers obtained from the LKIM Fish Landing Complex were also analysed. Differences in catch rates and distribution of Loligo duvaucelli and Sepia aculeata were observed. This study also covered the main crustacean species Charybdis cruciata and Portunus pelagicus caught in Kedah waters. Changes in catch rates of P. pelagicus and C. cruciata immediately after tsunami were prominent when compared to the catch rates of 2003 and 2004. However the results obtained were inadequate to relate any effect of the tsunami on the cephalopod and crustacean abundance in Kedah waters.
