Abstract
Carpet clam fishing activities have long been practised by coastal fishers in Kedah. Based on the findings from previous studies the dredging activities have caused severe physical and biological disturbances to the seabed structure and benthic communities. Changes in diversity and abundance of selected benthic organism were used to determine the impact of the tsunami on the carpet clam fishing grounds. Data from the surveys of 2003 and 2005 in the same fishing grounds were analyzed. The mean Shanon-Weaver diversity indices of selected species from the 2005 survey were between 0.5240.089 and in 2003 at 0.3960.178. Trachycadium subrugosum Terebra babylonia and Macoma sp. increased and dominated the macrobenthic communities. The species diversity in area A and area B between 2003 and 2005 remained the same. Only physical and biological disturbances on the benthic habitats by commercial dredging were obvious. Any possible impact from the tsunami on the macrobenthic communities in the carpet clam grounds would be from the physical disturbance of the seabed structure and this has yet to be comprehensively studied.
