Abstract
Mangosteen plantlets of the round-fruited common mangosteen and abovoid-fruited Mesta accessions obtained from cotyledon segments grown on MS supplemented with 9 mg/L BAP 0.4 mg/L NAA and 0.15 activated chacoal were evaluated based on morphological change and growth perfomance. Duncan test showed that there was no significant difference in girth diameter plant height and canopy diameter between tissue-culture derived and seedling plants. However Mesta plants were shown to grow more vigorously compared to the common mangosteen in all of these parameters. A variant Mesta with ant atypical phyllotaxy was found amongst the tissue culture derived plants. Instead of the opposite leaf arrangement typical of this species the variant plant produced three leaves from the terminal shoot at each flush leading to the growth of three branches from each node on the main stem.
