Abstract
The Matang Mangroves situated in the mid-western coast of the State of Perak covers an area of 40 466 hectares. It is the biggest aggregation of mangrove forest in Peninsular Malaysia forming a coastal belt protecting the interior. Gazetted in the early 1900s the Matang Mangroves had been managed ever since not only for its timber but also for its various functions in protection of the fragile eco-system. The monumental effort by foresters then had succeeded in laying the foundation for the management and silvicultural practices that are been used up to the present. The long term and intermediate management plans are rigidly followed and had been successful in sustaining the timber supply as well as the various roles expected of the mangroves over the years. These have been the strength for the successful management of the Matang Mangroves. However recent developments especially the traditional use of charcoal for fuel the protective nature of the mangroves aquaculture bio diversity conservation and interest in eco-tourism related activities are challenges that need to be looked into. Addressing the challenges cautiously will enable the sustainable development of this precious resource.
