Forest management law in Malaysia: policy and legislation.

In the quest to realize the vision 2020 Malaysia has undergone rapid economic social and environmental changes a process that is still continuing. Rapid loss of the Malaysian rain forest in the twentieth century is closely linked to economic development. The challenge in Malaysia for forest management is highly complex. It involves process that are linked to land conversion for agriculture and other land uses dynamics of the logging and timber trade and the legal framework regulating these processes. Malaysias national goal of ensuring sustainable management of its forest to maintain environmental quality and continued supply of forest produce can only be achieved by aligning harvesting rates with the forest growth rates and by renewing and protecting the remaining forest. The aim of this study to highlight what are the laws and policies regarding forest management in Malaysia. References will be made to the relevant international national and state laws. It is not the aim of this paper to highlight the weaknesses of the law or to introduce new rules and regulations or to suggest on the best available technique on forst management. It is thus hoped that this study will assist law and policy makers as part of their literature for further research on finding solution to a sustainable management.
