Abstract
Keep Planting Trees is the message by children to children of the world as a result of the Tunza International Childrens Conference on the Environment held in Putrajaya from 26-30 August 2006. The conference was a joint organisation between UNEP and YAWA and it focused on the Rainforest and Biodiversity. A new forest called Rimba Tunza Taman Wetland Putrajya was dedicated to the children from 60 countries. Delegates chaperones and volunteers planted 70 trees on behalf of their countries helping each other in a truly global effort. The message is to create awareness for children from all over the world. When they return home they are to Keep Planting Trees hence to implant awareness on the importance of trees in their lives. This was YAWAs effort to take global action in creating global awareness on biodiversity through children. Apart from tree planting the children visited forests FRIM and Parks where they discovered beautiful flowers and scents. Fifty Malaysian children who attended the conference together made a pledge to : - Plant a minimum of 20 trees each year- Organise International Tree Planting Week in the last week of September- Create own Tree Day in a yearand - Join the UNEP Plan for the Planet campaign to plant 1 billion trees in 2007. At the local scene YAWA proposed to work in partnership with corporate and organisations to take positive local actions to create public awareness towards biodiversity by promoting the pledges made by the global children involving community and scholl children nationally creating a long-term and on-going public awareness campaign.
