Abstract

In managing and developing conservation strategies it is often necessary for one to understand and asses the value of the environment around us. Rapid environmental changes the occured as a result of both global climate changes and man made reasons do not only have an immediate effect on the biodiversity but also future conservation strategies as well. Considering this the Sabah Forestry Department has set up the Forest Research Centre FRC in 1974 to centralized different research specialities in the effort of studying the state forest resources like mangrove transitional peat and fresh water swamp heath montane manmade and virgin forests. To date there are a total of 11 programs in the FRC focusing on areas of specialities and they are natural forest management plantation siviculture utilization of forest and non forest products tree improvement and seed source establishment soil and watershed pests and diseases plant diversity insect diversity tourism biotechnology and phytochemistry. All these studies are essential in contributing to environmental protection in view that the recent climatic changes might have long term effects on the existing species richness and distribution in the state. Besides information gathered from studies is also used to educate the wider public in terms of the importance of the environment and its conservation Thus trying to fulfill our role as the guardian of the forests and achieving our mission in managing the states forest resources according to the principles of sustainable forest management.
