Abstract

The effect of safety knowledge transfer on safety attitudes self-reported accident history and perceptions of management safety priorities was evaluated with a sample of agricultural workers from three Malaysian palm oil plantations. The more knowledge to which workers had been exposed through both formal and informal modalities the more likely they were to have positive safety attitudes to report fewer occupational accidents and to perceive management as caring about worker safety. Worker locus of control and on-the-job experience were also found to positively influence safety attitudes. Safety attitudes had a significant positive effect on self-reported accident history. Implications for future research into safety knowledge transfer are discussed and a contextual-mediated reseach model is proposed.
