Ismail Adnan Abdul Malek, . (1995) Common damage in forest stand from timber harvesting practices in Peninsular Malaysia: a review. [Proceedings Paper]

Abstract

Harvesting of forests be it for their resources or for other forms of development involves some degree of disturbance or damage to the remaining forest stand and ecosystems. The extent of damage depends on the intensity of harvest technology employed and attitude of the forest harvesters. Two common damage which are of major concern to foresters because of their consequences on the biodiverisity and future potential of the remaining forest stand are damage from tree felling and damage from ground skidding/road making practices. This paper presents a descriptive overview of the two types of damage their causes and consequences. An approach that emphasized better planning and accountability in timber harvesting practices on the part of the timber harvesters in Peninsular Malaysia is essential in the effort to minimize the damage.
