Abstract

Nyireh or Xylocarpus spp. belongs to Meliaceae and is the Standard Name for Malaysia and the ASEAN region. Major species include X moluccensis and X. granatum and the grow along the coastline. The timber is moderately hard to hard and moderately heavy to heavy. Its air-dry density at 15 moisture content range from 625-880 kg/m3. The sapwood is light yellow-brown straw-coloured or light pink which can easily distinguished from the light red to very dark red heartwood. The wood texture is fine and even with interlocked irregular grain making it difficult to saw the work but the finish product is smooth. Shrinkage is moderately high 2 and 3.2 radial and tangential shrinkage respectively. The timber is very attractive and is suitable for high class cabinet work interior finishing paneling partitioning and stair railing. The timber is extensively used by the native people for carvings and the manufacture of fancy articles and ornaments.
