Abstract

This paper highlights preliminary results of a survey conducted on the producers manufacturers and consumers of herbal products processed from Mas cotek Ficus deltoidea species. As Mas cotek products are relatively new compared to Tongkat ali Eurycoma longifolia Kacip fatimah Labisia pumila and Misai kucing Orthosiphon stamineus it is essential to assess its potential as an alternative herbal product to existing ones or as a completely new remedial measure in medicinal use. The objectives of the survey were to gather information on the aspects of the background of people involved in Mas cotek business product awareness the status of raw material requirement the economics of production and the marketing of the products. A list of respondents for the survey was gathered from Herbal Asia Exhibition 2007 Women Health Asian Tradition Medicine Exhibition WHAT 2007 MIGHT Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology Malaysian Herbal Corporation MHC internet search and personal telephone conversation with MARDI researchers. Results from the survey from August 2007 until January 2008 of 15 Mas cotek companies showed that 87 of the companies were involved in Mas cotek tea production in 2006. To date the other products from Mas cotek are coffee capsules juice cordial jamu and Mas cotek oil. Apart from the potentials the outcome of this study also highlighted the constraints in Mas cotek business prospects.
