Abstract
Vitex trifolia family Lamiaceae or locally name as lemuni was reported to possess antibacterial anticancer and antimicrobial properties. The bluish water extract from the leaves is commonly used as a food colorant. Flavone analogue lignan derivatives a norditerpene and triterpenoids were among the isolated compounds from Vitex species. However previous investigation were mostly focused on samples from India and Bangladesh. This is due to the herbs significant functioning the practice of Ayurvedic. Therefore a chemical study was preformed in order to examine the composition of local lemuni. The dried leaves including the flowers were separated from the stems weighing 220g and 120g respectively. Both part were ground and added with non-aqueous solvents consecutively. The weights and the percentages of the extract were calculated from the sample dry weight. It was found that the most significant yield were retrieved from the chloroform leaf extract 20g 9 and methanol stem extract 14g 14. The extract from both part were subjected to thin layer chromatography TLC Silica gel Merck hexane: chloroform 50:50. It showed several spots R 0.3 to 0.8 indicating the presence of chemical substituents. Meanwhile from the ultraviolet spectroscopy the spectra showed that the maximum absorption of the extracts were found at z345.376 and 664 nm. This corresponds to the presence of chromophores. The purification and biological studies of the extracts are in progress. In summary all extracts require further examination in order to fully identify the phytochemicals in this herbal species.
