Abstract

Five simpoh Dillenia L. species out often that occur in Peninsular Malaysia were found to have ethnobotanical value to certain ethnic groups in Malaysia as well as in South East Asia. This study was conducted to ascertain the ethnobotanical value among the simpoh species that occur in Peninsular Malaysia. Besides that it also aims to distinguish the species involved using some diagnostic characters. In order to fulfill the objective the ethnobotanical usage of the species of Dillenia occurring in Peninsular Malaysia was compiled from various secondary resources. Meanwhile the tips to recognize these species were based on the observations made during fieldworks and samples examined from various herbaria in Peninsular Malaysia including the Herbarium of Singapore SING. It was found that simpoh are mostly used to treat diarrhoea cough fever and to staunch bleeding wounds while the fruits are usually consumed as food. Two species of simpoh were found to have antioxidant and antimicrobial value. On the other hand the structure of the inflorescence flower fruit and leaf character especially the petiole venation indumentum and colour were found to be very important to distinguish the species of simpoh. Additional information on the economic usage habitat and distribution of these species in Peninsular Malaysia were also recorded. In conclusion simpoh may be worthwhile for further screening as they are quite widespread in Peninsular Malaysia.
