Abstract
The potentials of coconut Cocos nucifera lumber as furniture input were studied. The solid coconut was divided into inner and outer parts. The parts were tested on two different testing conditions; green and air-dry conditions. Each part of the solid coconut was tested for physical and mechanical properties such as moisture content Me basic density modulus of rupture MOR modulus of elasticity MOE shear stress and compression parallel to the grain. The study showed that the physical and mechanical properties of the outer part were superior compared with the inner part of the solid coconut. The results were almost 50 better than the inner part. As additional information the coconut log recovery was also investigated with two different cutting patterns that were turn around and through and through. By occupying the turn around cutting pattern it was found that the log recovery rate was better than that of through and through cutting pattern with recovery rates after cutting was 45.8 and 32.4 respectively. Besides the log recovery rates after drying were 42.5 for turn around cutting pattern and 26.9 for through and through cutting pattern. Further investigations on the jointing and glue lamination tests of solid coconut as potential furniture will be determined to reveal the true potential of solid coconut as furniture input.
