Abstract
Research efforts made in different parts of the world including USA have brought back coconut especially the virgin coconut oil VCO to the lime light. VCO is miracle oil beneficial to health beauty and strength. It contains a high level of medium chain triglyceride MCT which provides a quick source of energy. Generally VCO can be produced either through dry or wet process. The choice of process to be adopted depends on the scale of the operation the degree of mechanization that is desired availability of the raw materials and most of all on the demand of the prospective buyer. The quality and physio-chemical characteristics of the VCO produced is very much dependent on the process and the raw materials used. Due to the growing popularity of VCO the price and demand for VCO has increased and Malaysian standards of VCO had been established to control its quality consistency. MARDI has developed a value added VCO product with broad spectrum of antimicrobial activities. In vitro study showed that this value added VCO product has broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity against gram positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus Listeria monocytogenes Streptococous pyogenes and Bacillus cereus; gram negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli Vibrio cholerae and Salmonella typhi and fungi Candida albicans Candida krusei and Pityrosporum ovale. A recent survey conducted by MARDI revealed that it was very effective against dandruff scabies and candidiasis. It has potential to treat skin disease in human and animal can be formulated as active ingredients for personal hygiene products food preservative agents and act as disinfectant for household and hospital equipment.
