Abstract

A study was conducted to determine the bending strength properties of coconut lumber. Three coconut trees were selected and each of the trees was divided into three portions according to their position: bottom middle and top. Each portion was later sawn into two zones: inner and outer. The samples from different portions were sawn to specific dimension before being tested. The bending test was carried out according to ISO 3132:1975 E. The results showed that the Modulus of Elasticity MOE for bottom inner was 3708.91 MPa while its Modulus of Rupture MOR was 18.19 MPa. The MOE for bottom outer was 10199.60 MPa while its MOR was 81.62 MPa. The MOE for middle inner was 2912.71 MPa while its MOR was 24.62 MPa. The MOE for middle outer was 11978.81 MPa while its MOR was 80.69 MPa. Similarily the MOE for top inner was the lowest at 1636.81 MPa while its MOR was 21.87 MPa. Lastly the MOE for top outer is 10927.20 MPa while its MOR was 83.98 MPa. The results showed that there were variations in strength properties of the coconut lumber within its stem and between stems of different trees.
