Abstract
This study was undertaken to determine the properties of laminated veneer lumber from oil palm trunk bonded with different adhesives and glue spreads. Experimental laminated veneer lumber from oil palm trunk veneers were bonded with three different adhesives namely emulsion polymeric isocyanate with toluene emulsion polymeric isocyanate without toluene and polyvinyl acetate. Two adhesive spread levels were used: 250 and 500 g m-2 for single glue line. Laminated veneer lumber from rubberwood was used as control. Density water absorption thickness swelling and tensile shear strength were evaluated. Thickness swelling water absorption and tensile shear strength were tested in dry cold hot and cyclic pretreatments. The results showed that the tensile shear strength of panels made from oil palm trunk veneer bonded with polyvinyl acetate was better compared with panels made using emulsion polymeric isocyanate with and without toluene. The properties of oil palm panels made using polyvinyl acetate without pretreatment dry test showed better water resistance than those panels made after hot pretreatment. The mean water absorption and thickness swelling values were found to be the least in panels bonded with the adhesive emulsion polymeric isocyanate with toluene.
