The need for pricing policy for forest recreation areas as ecotourism destination

Abstract

The Forest Department Peninsular Malaysia has established a total of 130 forest recreational parks and these are known as Forest Recreational Area or Amenity Forest under section 10 of the National Forestry Act 1984. Realizing the importance of forest conservation and management for other than timber products the Forestry Department of Peninsular Malaysia has given emphasis on the functional roles of forests especially for recreational purposes. In the revised National Forestry Policy 1992 the objective of amenity forest was to provide for the conservation of adequate forest areas for recreation ecotourism and public awareness in forestry. This clearly redefined the need to reclassify forest areas not only for the conservation of flora and fauna but also places for ecotourism and public education. In this regard the establishment of Forest Recreational Areas is to provide suitable areas for the public to enjoy the forest environment educate themselves conserve and protect nature. The need to upgrade some of the forest recreational areas into ecotourism destinations is very crucial to tap the increasing demand for unique and challenging experiences that forest can provide. This situation requires the Forest Department needs to explore and determine the possible charges or fees on the public for the use of facilities services and resources provided at the forest recreational areas. This paper highlights the current recreational value of visitors the facilities and services provided in forest recreational area. The information will enable the department to improve facilities and services to satisfy the needs of the public for outdoor recreation and for the future development of forest recreational areas.
