Abstract

Selangor has the third largest area of mangrove forests 19 680 ha or 17.9 of total area in Peninsular Malaysia. It accounted for 2:3 of the total land area of Selangor. This paper provides a preliminary socio-economic assessment of the importance of the mangrove forests to the state. It will assess the direct uses such as contribution from pole production; fishery resources aquaculture and some indirect values ecosystem functions such as shoreline protection and conservation of wildlife. It provides an overview and identifies the locations of such uses within the state of Selangor. For the purpose of the analysis the coastal areas of Selangor is divided into 3 main zones i.e. the Northern Coastal Zone NCZ spanning from Sabak Bernam to Kuala Selangor the Central Coastal Zone CCZ spanning from Kuala Selangor to Jugra and covering all the islands around the Port Klang areas and the Southern Coastal Zone SCZ covering the area from Jugra to Kuala Sepang.
