Abstract

Parks and open spaces are important aspect of urban livability. It is widely purported that urban parks if properly responsive with its surrounding area can improve urban environment by enhancing community development and social bondage. Most cities have not yet realized the benefit and relationships of quality public place and public life. And many have not even started to explore the role that parks can play in revitalizing communities. Often their importance is forgotten in the debate of architecture and built form. This is particularly evident in the developing cities like Dhaka where cities sprawl extensively. Dhaka needs a huge stock of open spaces for urban sustainability. The little amount of urban spaces that still serves the city is also in a very deprived condition.this paper investigates the accessibility of open space at neighbourhood scale which is one of the key attributes of responsiveness. Without adequate accessibility the provision of good quality or quantity of open spaces would be of very limited value. The paper focuses on parks at planned and unplanned residential area of Dhaka city to observe their response level in terms of accessibility. This study will apply correlational research strategy to examine different variables affecting the accessibility of the urban parks. This paper also recommends some guidelines to enhance the quality of urban parks by improving their accessibility which in turn will enhance the image of the city and its sustainability.
