Abstract

Conservation in towns and cities is becoming very important to ensure the survival of indigenous species. The primary functions of zoos and aquariums as healing the relationship between man animal and their mutual environment. Zoos are natural areas within cities that provide a refuge for plants and animals and can also be used for education relaxation and recreation. Modem zoos consciously landscape the whole area in and around the enclosures. This landscaping and the use of indigenous plants create a physical connection between the individual enclosures within the zoo. Consequently the zoos become suitable habitats for native fauna and flora. Although conservation of endangered species and their habitats is a key role of zoos zoos offer important places of retreat to many species in landscapes that are highly urbanized cut up by traffic routes and emptied by intensive agricultural practices. One can often find near-natural areas between the enclosures in zoos. Zoos contain a large number and variety of microhabitats. Animal facilities offer habitats to numerous species of animals. The number of predators tends to be lower inside of zoos than outside. Birds kept in zoos attract wild birds. Wild animals can benefit from the food that is offered to zoo animals. Zoos are in a unique position to provide conservation education and in doing so; contribute to influencing peoples attitudes emotions knowledge and behaviours about wildlife and wild places.
