Abstract

Indonesia is the largest archipelago in the world consisting of more than 16 000 islands. The population reaches 230 million people who mainly live in rural areas as farmers. Although the country has abundant natural resources the farmers live in poverty. They have less than 0.3 hectare cultivated land and on the average two raised animals per household. In order to boost the harvest of plants they use chemical fertilizers and pesticides. The environment in these rural areas are polluted with animal waste that remain without proper processing inside the pens near their houses for months. As a result methane is emitted. The veterinary schools in Indonesia are facing a problem regarding community services. It is one of the requirements that veterinary students perform community services before they graduate. During the period of community service the student live with the farmers for two months in the rural areas in an environment densely populated with animals. To overcome the problems faced by the farmers veterinary schools in Indonesia designed special programs for their students to perform community services. In this program several improvements are introduced to the farmers including promoting communal pens and fermentation of animal waste. The fermentation process not only produces biogas as renewable-energy but aIso yields organic-fertilizer which could recover the soil fertility after prolonged use of chemical fertilizers.
