Abstract
This study investigated mutagenic and anti-mutagenic potentials of freeze dried fruit juices of Morinda elliptica Ridl. Morinda citrifolia L. Averrhoa bilimbi L. Phyllantus acidus L. Skeels and Myristica fragrans Houtt. in Allium cepa L. For mutagenicity test each juice was dissolved in tap water to make 500-4000 mg/kg w/v concentrations while anti mutagenicity test involved dissolving both the juice and cyclophosphamide CP 50 mg/kg in tap water. Root length and tips of suspended onions in these solutions were measured and examined microscopically after 48 h of growth. DPPH free radical scavenging activity was tested using butylated hydroxyanisole BHA with butylated hydroxy toluene BHT as the reference standard. M. fragrans;s juice radical scavenging activity at 1mg/ml concentrations is similar to BHA and BHT. The juices inhibited root growth and cell division in A. cepa. Juices mixtures with exception to A. bilimbi-CP combination exhibited less mito-depressive effect on the cell division than their ordinary juices. Chromosomal aberrations induced were not significantly different from the negative control with exception to M. citrifolia;s at 2000 mg/kg and P. acidus at 1000-2000 mg/kg. Mutagenic effect of CP was reduced by the juices but not in concentration dependent except for M. fragrans. The observed mutagenic effects could be due to synergistic reactions between DPPH radical scavengers and other phytochemicals present. Anti-mutagenicity test conductes suggested that the lowering of cytotoxic and mutagenic effects of CP on A. cepa;s cell division and chromosome structure was due to anti-oxidants.
