Abstract

The prevalence of soil degradation in tropical rehabilitated forests requires suitable indicators of their health status. The objective of this study was to determine if there is a relationship between soil cellulolytic phosphatesolubilizing and nitrogen-fixing microbial counts and age of a rehabilitated forest. This study was conducted in a rehabilitated forest at Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Sarawak Campus. Soil cellulolytic nitrogen-fixing and phosphatesolubilizing microorganisms from 4 9 14 and 19 year-old forests were enumerated on selective media namely Congo red cellulose Nfb and PSM media. All the microbial counts demonstrated positive relationships with the forest ages. Linear relationships were observed in cellulolytic and nitrogen-fixing microbes while quadratic relationship in P-solubilizing microbes. The fact that the cellulolytic microorganisms showed highest population and linear relationship with forest age demonstrates the possibility of using them as one of the biological indicators of the health status of rehabilitated forest soils.
