Abstract

Use of molecular techniques to study biodiversity in Malaysia has been somewhat limited to studies on genetic diversity of particular species, both among different accessions or populations of a species, and between closely related species. Phylogenetic relationships and molecular systematic studies of selected groups are also conducted to clarify problem areas in taxonomy. Although such approaches have only recently been employed in studies of local species, they have been widely applied elsewhere and have become increasingly popular as a tool for assessing genetic diversity and relatedness. Local examples of application in fruit tree species such as Garcinia and Lansium species as well as in dipterocarps will be discussed
