Abstract
Ginger species are diverse rhizomatous plants. Etlingera spp. or commonly known as Torch Gingers are beautiful and attractive as ornamental plants besides some of them being used in local dishes. There is however not much research conducted on these plants. This study recorded the vegetative growth and inflorescence development of Etlingera punicea domesticated at Sabah Agriculture Park Tenom Malaysia. It is an earth ginger plant. The plants there are among the collection of ginger species planted for research education and other relevant studies. Etlingera punicea domesticated ex-situ as studied had an average height of 2.7 m to 2.8 m with average diameter of tillers of 2.1 cm to 2.4 cm. These plants generally developed 15 to 16 leaves sized 47 cm x 13 cm. The inflorescence was showy and sized 8.8 cm to 10.3 cm with contrasting bright yellow colored lip fringed with red. The inflorescence is rather short lived. It took an average of 11 days from visible inflorescence bud to senescence and the blooming inflorescence was seen for only two days. Plants showed better vegetative growth and inflorescence development with higher degree of exposure to sunlight and availability of moisture.
