Abstract

There are many values associated with wetlands. This is determined by the inter-action of the various physical chemical and biological characteristic of a particular wetland. Wetlands store massive amounts of water which stabilize the ground water table. Wetlands especially peat and freshwater swamps contributes a significant amount of water for agricultural purposes and domestic water supply and maintain natural river flow especially during dry periods. Wetland also play important roles in mitigating flood waters ground water recharge and discharge nutrients and sediment/toxicant retention. They also play important roles especially for sustainable agriculture and socio-economic development. An urgent comprehensive program for wetland conservation in Malaysia is needed and this should go beyond their status as the habitat of many endangered plant and animal species.
