Environmental implications of land drainage

Abstract

Land drainage has played and will continue to play an important role in the improvement of the quality of human life. However there is substantial evidence that drainage schemes while functioning correctly in an engineering sense may have indirect or inadvertent effects which may be undesirable. These undesirable effects occur in the physical biological chemical and economic components of the total environment. Most important impacts are manifested in the form of hydrological changes effects on vegetation wildlife and water quality. This paper highlights the various environmental implications that often arise as a result of land drainage. Appreciating these implications and incorporating their solutions in the design and planning of drainage projects will lead to a sound drainage system and more sustainable utilization of resources.
