Design and construction of water management facilities in drainage areas

Citation

Schultz Bart, . (1993) Design and construction of water management facilities in drainage areas. [Proceedings Paper]

Abstract

The paper gives a comprehensive overview of the design construction and maintenance of land and water management projects in drainage areas covering important factors that need to be dealt with in the various stages of the work. It stresses the need to ensure that the project is attractive for the beneficiaries to initiate and continue with the activities involved. A description is given on the different levels of drainage i.e. field drains and main drains covering design practices for field drains and drainage systems for sloping and flat areas. Important factors in the design of structures associated with the drainage system such as sluices and pumping stations are mentioned. Optimization in the design in described with reference to design of a drainage system in a polder and methodology for integrated tidal lowland water management. Construction aspects of drainage system cover construction materials and machinery for construction control and inspection and maintenance. In maintaining the drainage system the paper stresses on the importance of proper organisation and financing appropriate legal framework and standards and clear understanding on the responsibility of the Government and the farmers in ensuring the sustainability of the system. In providing the drainage system crucial aspects that determines the success of the system are highlighted namely the level of service and the capacity to pay and the typical character of the maintenance of the drainage system.
