Abstract

The availability of soil data surveyed and collected in Peninsular Malaysia by the Department of Agriculture is initially highlighted in this paper. The types of survey elaborated are i reconnaisance soil survey ii semi-detailed soil survey and iii detailed soil survey. The progress achieved for each of these types of survey is reported in the paper. In addition the usefullness of these data and the resultant maps in agricultural drainage planning is also given emphasis where through the process of soil evaluation of internal external and other factors information relevant to different levels and needs of planning are generated either manually or using computers. The system capability of the Department of Agriculture computer facilities for spatial data manipulation is also briefly discussed. Soils and other spatial data collected by the Department are classified as restricted materials and consequently a general explanation on the procedure and conditions of the procurement of these maps and data is also given in the paper.
