Abstract
The strong commitment towards oil palm breeding and research in FELDA Agricultural Services Bhd FASSB has enabled the establishment of several series of breeding schemes and strategies. Within forty years of involvement FASSB exploited various germplasm and advanced rials to broaden its narrow genetic base of breeding population. The utilization of MPOB;s germplasm materials originating from Nigeria since 1989 has demonstrated the potential of commercializing these materials such as the superior performance of DxP;s derived from Deli x Nigerian dura x Yangambi pisiferas group DNY. Sixteen percent l74kg/p/yr of DNY and 149kg/p/yr of Deli x YangambiDY and 10 percent 232kg/p/yr of DYN and 211 kg/p/yr of DY sigficant improvement of immature and mature FFB mean yields respectively have been ;ved from this group compared to current FELDA Deli x Yangambi groupDY in Trial. These significant increments have raised the oil yield potential at the mature stage from 8.5 t/ha in DY to 9.5 t/ha in DNY. A similar oil yield profile was also recorded in Trial T163 8.8t/ha for DY to 9.2t/ha for DNY. Apart from oil yield several traits that showed moderate significant improvement were bunch indexBI and rachis length RL. The BI increased 0.45 to 0.5 from the introgression of Nigerian dura with advanced Deli dura population while the maximum rachis length was reduced from 7.49m in DY to 7.15m in DNY. This will selections for higher density planting which in turn will also improve FFB and oil yield/ha.
