Abstract

The anchovy fishery is a small but valuable fishery on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Landings totalled 13 497 tonnes in 1997 and were valued at around RM42 million. This fishery is the main commercial fishery at Pulau Langkawi Kedah which is currently the main producer of dried anchovies in Malaysia. Anchovies are pelagic in nature and are distributed in inshore areas no more than a few nautical miles from the shore. Bigger sized fish are found slightly further offshore while smaller fish are distributed more abundantly in waters around the fringes of offshore islands which serve as nursery grounds. The main species of anchovy caught is Encrasicholina heteroloba. The closure ofthe area within two nautical miles of the Pulau Payar Marine Park is seen to positively contribute to the management of the anchovy fishery of Pulau Langkawi.
