Sea cucumbers of Pulau Payar Kedah Marine Park Islands

This project was carried out as part of the sea cucumber study partly sponsored by the Darwin Initiative of U.K. and the Department of Fisheries. It was carried out to determine the species diversity of sea cucumber around Pulau Payar. A short seasonal distribution study was also carried out on Stiehopus horrens Selenka 1867. Twelve species of sea cucumber were identified from the survey at Pulau Payar. Monthly observation of S. horrens on the reef adjacent to Pulau Payar Marine Park Center showed a possibility of seasonal variation but further studies should be carried out to ascertain this. The cause of seasonal changes in sea cucumber number was not determined. Pulau Payar was selected as the study site as the area was protected by regulation and no harvesting was allowed there.
