Abstract

Prostate cancer is the most prevalent cancer in American men and the second leading cause cancer deaths. The probability of developing prostate cancer in the United States is one in six. Prostate cancer has the greatest country-to-country variation in incidence of any reportable cancer suggesting the importance of nutrition and environmental factors. Current treatment for metastatic prostate cancer involves by androgen ablation resulting in reduced cellular proliferation and induction of programmed cell death apoptosis. A fraction of the prostate cancer cells continue to grow even in the absence of androgen. These androgen-independent metastatic prostate cells are unresponsive to conventional antiproliferative agents and usually result in a fatal outcome.
