Abstract

When the Kyoto Protocol came into force in 16 February 2002 member countries began to initiate programs that help to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in their respective way indigenous to their own country. Malaysia is one of them. One of the sectors that contribute to the uneconomical consumption of energy is in the building industry. The sub-sectors that feed into the construction of a building depended highly on the design of buildings and this then refers mostly to the building designers viz. the planners the architects and engineers. These are the front-liners that need to be made aware of the deteriorating environmental conditions emanating from bad design decisions and therefore need to be rectified before corrective measures by costly renovations becomes inevitable. This paper seeks to inform the public non-building professionals and the building professionals about the Malaysian national program in all sectors to reduce C02 emission and then zooming down to the building industry. As the text unfolds several misconceptions of building design elements are highlighted.
