Abstract
Water pollution is a major environmental problem faced by modem society that leads to ecological disequilibrium and health hazards. Heavy metal ions such as copper cadmium lead nickel and chromium often found in industrial wastewater present acute toxicity to aquatic and terrestrial life including humans. Thus the discharge of effluents into the environment is a chief concern. The methods commonly used to remove toxic heavy metals from municipal and industrial wastewater are based on the absorption of ions onto insoluble compounds. Sorbex „ is comprised of impregnated sulfide of lightweight cementitous porous matrix that allow precipitation with heavy metal ions in water. It is used as absorbent to remove heavy metals and protect the environment from heavy metal leaching. These studies are focus on ability and efficiency of Sorbex„ as absorbent in removing heavy metals ions in wastewater compare with Granular Activated Carbon GAC and Powdered Activated Carbon PAC. The study was carried out for simulated wastewater and analyzed using Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry AAS. As a results it was found that the Sorbex„ granular had removed 97.9 ion Fe2and 96.3 ion Fe3. It is proved that Sorbex„ could be one of the alternative sources of absorbent to remove heavy metals in wastewater treatment.
