Abstract

Malaysia faces air pollution problems due to the abundancet of airborne particulate matters in the air as well as toxic gases. Many researches observed that plants play an important role in reducing air pollutants. Plants can adsorb those toxic gases and also functions as a deposition surface for particulate matters. As for its application for example in determining plants for landscaping not much attention has been given to select trees which could help to improve the air quality. In this research four types of trees that are widely used for landscaping have been studied to determine their ability to trap particulate matters. These trees are Duranta Gold Ixora coccinea Bougainvillea and Hibiscus rosa-sinensin. Gravimetric analyses of the leaves of each tree were investigated for their ability to trap particulate matters while Topper Microscope is used to obtain the leave surface images. Result shows that Bougainvillea has the highest ability to trap particulate matter compared to the other trees.
