Abstract
Past research studies have indicated that Tasik Harapan is eutrophic with high algae concentration occasionally exceeding 300 ug/l chi a due to high nutrient levels in the lake. These nutrients consisting of phosphorus and nitrogen are derived from sediments accumulated over the past 20 years. Dissolved oxygen levels fluctuate wildly over the diurnal cycle reaching 12 mg/l at late afternoon and almost anaerobic during midnight. Efforts to rehabilitate the lake are currently initiated by the healthy campus program. This paper presents an integrated approach based upon a combination of methodology consisting of numerical simulations engineering ingenuity and holistic thinking to assist in the rehabilitation of Tasik Harapan. The rehabilitation is based upon the removal of sediments in the lake and subsequent maintenance of Tasik Harapan as a living and flowing water body. Rainwater harvesting appears to be a sustainable option to replenish the supply of water to Tasik Harapan.
