A review of various forms of RD activity point to the necessity for a national institute of a multidisciplinary nature replete not only with specifically food-oriented commodities and disciplines but also with certain essential support service sections like documentation technology transfer and project planning. Factors in the choice of problems and their pursuit are outlined. Measures that would make for staff satisfaction are considered and certain facets of budgeting and project costing are touched upon. Training programmes and teaching courses arise from felt needs and those offered in India are described. Relevance in practical curriculum-building is illustrated through the international M.Sc. course in food technology designed for participants from developing countries.
