Abstract
The utilization of packaging in distribution of food products and preventing spoilage is significant. The requirements and choice of package for a particular product are equally important. Testing package package-material and packaged per duct is necessary and resting methods for individual product need to be comprehended. For this paper plastic material was chosen for studying the package characteristic. Food package testing for mechanical strength was exemplified by experimenting with a rigid plastic bottle used for Vitagen liquid food beverage Two types of tests including charpy impact on Impact-tester and quasi-static compression on Instron machine were done with different test positions of the specimen. Results seems to refer to the anisotropic state the material in both impact and comprehension. Ageing reduced the impact strength. while both fresh and one year old specimens were found to be brittle in impact tests. Modulus of elasticity was determined from the quasi-static compression tests using Hertz equation of contact stresses.
