Abstract

Breeding for short height increment is one of the important criteria in oil palm breeding programmes other than high oil yields. Golden Hope;s short height programme involves the AVROS pisiferas Dumpy AVROS pisiferas and the Gunung Melayu duras. Results indicated that not all AVROS DxP materials are tall and vigorous. There are AVROS pisiferas which transmit high yields and short height increment to their DxP progenies. The Dumpy AVROS pisiferas being a three way cross are heterozygous leading to variable performance for oil yields and height in the DxP progenies. However there is potential for further improvements in this population. The Gunung Melayu duras were found to be short and capable of transmitting the short height characteristic in crosses with other Deli duras. However currently available data indicated that the pisiferas appeared to have a dominant influence on the height of the DxP progenies. Nevertheless breeding for short height increment in the duras should not be ignored and should be carried out concurrently with the pisifera programme.
