Abstract

Wax apple from a home garden fruit tree to an industry worthy ofUS 50 million per year is now an important fruit crop in Taiwan. Wax apple is a native ofMalay archipelago and has not been paid attention to for centuries. A break-through in forcing culture techniques in the early 80s has entirely changed the production and consumption patterns ofwax apple in Taiwan. High quality wax apple fruits are now being harvested 1 to 3 times a year beginning from winter months. The averaged net income ofwax apples was the second highest among all the tropical and subtropical fruit crops in Taiwan in 1994. With its popularity and high price in the market wax apple can be a potential economic fruit crop in the world.
