Resistance of some papaya varieties and their hybrids to ringspot virus disease

Abstract

Six genotypes viz. Tainung 5 Cariflora Eksotika Sabah Yellow Eksotika x Tainung and Eksotika x Cariflora were tested in a PRSV infected field for evaluation of their relative resistance to the disease. Two treatments i.e. inoculated IN or not inoculated NI were imposed on all the varieties. The results indicated that there was significant difference in growth and yield between treatments IN and NI and also between varieties. Plants which were previously inoculated with PRSV generally showed more rapid expression of disease symptoms and poorer performance compared with plants that were naturally infected without inoculation. Disease buildup under IN treatment was rapid with most plants showing symptoms after 6 weeks of planting compared with less than l00JO under NI regime. There was however 110 difference in fruit quality TSS between IN and NI treatments. This was because all the trees were infected after 14 weeks in the field and fruits that subsequently develop were all adversely affected in quality. For varietal response to PRSV infection Eksotika was the most susceptible. Under IN regime nearly all the trees did not bear any fruit and were severely stunted. Tainung and Cariflora showed high tolerance to the disease and yielded 15.3 kg and 9.2 kg of fruit tree respectively. Hybrids between Eksotika and the resistant parents showed intermediate tolerance with yields ranging from 6.5 kg to 9.0 kg/tree. The results of the trial in relation to long-term breeding strategies for developing resistant varieties with Eksotika genetic background is discussed.
